Cape Chamomile (Eriocephalus punctulatus) belongs to the Asteraceae family and is an aromatic shrub endemic to the mountains of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is a bushy shrub with simple green grey needle like leaves and white, woolly like flower heads which gives rise to it’s local name Kapokbos, meaning frost bush.
It is used as a traditional medicine to encourage pleasant dreams and burned to clear evil spirits after a death has occurred.
The beautiful deep blue colour is due to the presence of azulenic compounds.
Plant material is grown commercially, propagation is relatively easy.
